A photographer is hoping to head Down Under in a bid to snap up the ‘best job in the world’.

Damian Livesey is up against 24 hopefuls from across the globe vying to become a ‘lifestyle photographer’ through the Tourism Australia scheme.

More than 40,000 people applied for a total of six dream jobs, with job titles listed as chief funster, park ranger, taste master and wildlife caretaker.

The lifestyle photographer job is a six-month contract in Melbourne with a $50,000 salary and $50,000 living expense account.

Damian, originally from Clayton-le-Moors, was shortlisted for the once-in-a-lifetime role after creating a 30-second video CV using footage from a holiday in the city with his girlfriend Georgia Henn, 21.

He said: “I was recently in Australia with my girlfriend and we filmed everything we did so I added clips from experiences, like our skydive, to my application video. There are six jobs available but I’m hoping my expertise in film making will make me the best candidate for the role of lifestyle photographer.

“It’s basically a six-month contract based in Melbourne snapping people and looking at the way they live.

“I’m not working at the moment so what better job to apply for than the best job in the world?”  The winning ‘lifestyle photographer’ will document the hidden world of Melbourne, create city and country photo shoots and work with local designers and artists.

The remaining 150 hopefuls will now attempt to make it through to the final stage of the interview process in Australia in June.

The former Rhyddings High pupil added: “It was a real shock when I found out I had been shortlisted – I was overwhelmed. It’s potentially a life changing opportunity so I’m really excited.”

As part of the competition Damian is planning a number of PR stunts, the first of which involves him dressing up as a camera in Reading town centre, where he currently lives.

Damian’s mum Gail, who lives at the family home on Blackburn Road, said she is extremely proud of her son.

She said: “He’s always doing different things and something unusual. He always gives 110 per cent in everything he does. He really deserves the best job in the world because he’s such a lovely person. I would love him to get it.”

Damian is asking Observer readers to support him in his quest to land the best job in the world. Visit damian-lifestyle-photographer.tumblr.com for more information.
