An intrepid team of friends trekked along the Great Wall of China to raise money for a dementia charity.

Cathy Smith and Odette Vinnyey, both from Accrington, joined 35 other colleagues from Argos and Homebase for the mammoth trek from Huangyaguan to Mutianyu.

Over the six days the explorers climbed countless steps, experienced breath-taking views and immersed themselves in the rich history and culture of The Great Wall.

And their efforts have seen them raise more than £135,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society to help people living with dementia remain a part of the community.

Cathy – who has had family members hit by the condition – said the trek was a wonderful experience. She said: “It was a phenomenal experience that brought people together for a cause close to the hearts of so many.

A couple of my family members have had the condition. I’m thrilled to have raised so much and despite my sore feet I’m delighted to have taken on the challenge knowing my fundraising will support people living with dementia in my local area.”

The Alzheimer’s Society, Alzheimer Scotland and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland are Homebase and Argos’ charity partner 2013 to 2015. The money raised will fund Singing for the Brain groups, Dementia Cafes and Dementia Support.
