An Olympic banner is set to be erected at Accrington Town Hall to commemorate the passing of the Olympic torch through the borough.

The torch relay will pass through Accrington and Oswaldtwistle on Saturday, June 23 as part of its tour of towns and cities up and down the country.

The council is working with Lancashire Police and the county council to ensure it travels through the town safely and without delay.

A working group has been set up to plan the event and also to capitalise on the interest generated by the London games in general. It is also proposed that a flag is raised at Oswaldtwistle Civic Theatre to commemorate the arrival of the Olympic torch.

In a report to Cabinet, Hyndburn council’s health and leisure officer Ben Caulfield said: “One event currently in the planning process is an Olympic Festival and Urban Run – a family event to be held at Wilson’s Playing Fields following the torch relay.

“A funding application has been submitted to Lancashire county council’s Local Initiative Fund in order to help support the event.

“Local sports clubs will also be invited and encouraged to sign up new members.”

Other Olympic-related activity includes the appointment of a 2012 Legacy Officer by Hyndburn Leisure Trust on a 12-month fixed term contract with a starting salary of £27,052.

The role is focused on delivering increased participation in sport, culture and physical activity.

The proposals are due to go before the council cabinet on Wednesday, March 14.
