A 19 -year-old man has appeared before Blackburn magistrates accused of starting the fire which turned a parked lorry into a fireball.
Lee Alexander Bennison, of Riverside View, Clayton-le-Moors, is charged with arson being reckles as to whether the life of driver Ian Gemmell would be endangered.
Mr Gemmell was sleeping in the cab of his vehicle when he was woken by youths who had spotted the blaze taking hold in his load of cardboard.
The court heard he tried to uncouple the tractor unit to save it from damage but was driven back by the heat and exploding tyres.
Bennison was sent to Burnley Crown Court. He was granted bail by the magistrates but the prosecution immediately lodged an appeal against the decision which will be heard by a Crown Court judge.
Bennison will remain in custody until the appeal is heard.
