A MAN is fighting for his life after he was viciously attacked on Easter Monday.

Alan Pilkington, 31, of Tanpits Road, Church, was assaulted in Hyndburn Street, Accrington, at around 10pm.

He suffered serious head injuries and was yesterday described as critical but stable at the Royal Preston Hospital.

Paramedics rushed the victim, who is believed to live on his own, to the intensive care unit at Blackburn Royal Infirmary following the "violent and sustained assault".

Doctors then transferred him to Preston.

Detective Inspector Peter Broome, who is leading the investigation, said: "This man is clinging to life by a thread."

"He has suffered serious head injuries and his condition is very serious."

The incident sent shock waves around the community.

One nearby resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "You are not safe walking outside your own front door these days. It's awful."

Two men have been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

An incident room has been set up at Accrington Police Station and anyone with information is urged to contact detectives on 353740.
