RESPECT ... cafe owner Stacey Everett says it’s no wonder children are losing respect for their elders after the teacher’s stand.

A CAFE owner was outraged when a teacher burst into her premises and began shouting at late-for-school pupils.

Stacey Everett, 22, was serving sandwiches to four Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School pupils in her Nutty Butty cafe just before 8.50am when a female teacher stormed in and began screaming that they should be in class.

Mother-of-one Miss Ever-ett said: "I was absolutely disgusted with her behaviour.

"While those pupils were in my shop they were my customers and deserve the same respect as everyone else, regardless of whether they were going to be late for school or not.

"It really is no wonder that children today are losing respect for their elders when they are treated like that."

Miss Everett, who has been running the cafe for more than a year and lives in Victoria Street, Oswald-twistle, immediately contacted the head of the school to complain.

She said: "To receive respect you have to give it. If those children were mine I’d be pulling them out of that school.

"The teacher’s reaction was completely unnecessary and unjust."

Headteacher Barry Burke said: "We are very concerned about a number of students whose punctuality has deteriorated recently and we have decided to make sure students who arrive late are made aware of where they should be and that school begins at 8.40am.

"We will send letters to the parents of those who are persistently late.

"In this specific incident the students in question were still in Union Road well after classes had started and our staff member strongly told the pupils where they should be.

"Punctuality is very important to the school. If our staff member was over-zealous in her response it is unfortunate, but if our pupils want to get a job after leaving school they must realise punctuality is important."

A year ago the school stopped its students leaving the premises at lunchtimes due to residents’ complaints and timetable changes.

Speaking of Rhyddings students in his website welcoming address, headteacher Barry Burke says, "We nurture them and encourage them to ‘take risks’ in the knowledge that they are becoming true independent learners.” So this Nutty business may have been a part of the approved learning experience. What fun!

No response among more than thirty, as far as may be easily observed, from the teacher. Or is she Mrs Miggins, AnthonyUK, M Baines, Alison, Joan, ...? So much, then, for Rhyddings' vaunted community involvement: the world may read on its website 'Rhyddings has always been in the heart of the Hyndburn Community.' This is a shame, because in this respect Rhyddings compares with, say, Moorhead as Dostoevksy does with Dickens. Which means rather well.

iv got better things to worry about than what you think. you obviously have to much time on your hands. The amount of positive comments iv had in my shop totally outweigh the negative that people like you have to say. At the end of the day you wern't there so you really cant make a comment. My whole point was how she spoke to them. There was no reason why she coundn't have a quiet word with them but instead she chose to shout and scream in the middle of the street then rush back to school to lock them all out. You have obviously never ran your own shop or else you would know that we cant start refusing costomers

YOU came to the observer to complain about a teacher's attitude towards children in order to get publicity and show to everybody in Hyndburn how to show respect towards young people? Ridiculous. And the person who was writing a letter in opposition against the teachers' stance should NOT have had his point of view defending you at all Commonsense. Education and getting to it on time is MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR BUSINESS OF SERVING THEM BUTTIES/SNACKS/DRINKS AND MAKING THEM LATE.

it would seem that your not listening to what iv been saying these last 2 weeks. i agree that these schools kids should be in school on time. we have been told in the past they have to be there at 8:50 then 8:45 and now its 8:40. these kids came into my shop just b4 8:35. this mean at that time they were not late. i have a shop to run and i cant afford to start asking people weather it be a school child or a work man what time they have to be somewhere just incase waiting for some breakfast might make them late. my whole piont was to let parents know how there children are being spoken to. a costomer wrote a letter to the observer today who actually saw everything that happened in my cafe. it seem tho that they havnt printed it so obviously there only going to puplish bad articles about the whole matter. shame because every costomer that has mentioned it have all agreed with me so im not going to waste my time taking any notice of what people wright on here.

My comment was not regarding the picture, it was in regards to contacting a newspaper in order to support the loss of respect that children have for their elders. It is unbelievable that the pupils have been supported in their actions. Punctuality and attendance are very important for a number of reasons, may i highlight spelling. When referring to a person with an opinion as an "idiot" you should perhaps question your ability to handle debates. I am also sure you would not be supportive if it was your own child within the group. Hopefully you too would understand the teachers anger, although from your actions I am not certain.

i wanted free advertising?????? when i rang the observer i didnt even know if they would be interested. i was gob smacked when they rang me the following week and asked if they could take my picture. its only when the photographer arrived that i was told it was being taken outside. like i said before this was never once about profits or anything like that and all these idiots that say it is are judging me by there own standerds and not mine

...looks like someone wanted free advertising for their cafe-leave the teacher out of it-shame the pupils, they do not deserve the education they are offered. Later in life they will realise their mistakes, I am sure.

It seems to me all Stacey Everett is bothered about is her business, her own comments on this blog suggest that money and publicity are her motives in this issue. Well done to that teacher who decided that the welfare of these children did not stop at the school gates, and shame on the Observer for allowing Stacey Everett to manipulate the publication into promoting truancy amongst schoolchildren.

The law IS THE LAW;ALL children in the United Kingdom HAVE TO HAVE AN EDUCATION BE IT HOME OR SCHOOL AND IT IS THE SCHOOL THAT SETS RULES FOR TIMEKEEPING AND ABSENCES,AND I DON'T BLAME SCHOOLS FOR DOING THIS AND I DON'T BLAME TEACHERS FOR DOING THIS IF IT KEEPS TRUANCY AND LATENESS AND UNAUTHORISED ABSENCES DOWN. TELL YOU WHAT, IF I WAS A PARENT AND I GOT A WARNING LETTER ABOUT MY CHILD'S LATENESS FROM THE SCHOOL HE ATTENDED BECAUSE HE WENT INTO A CAFF OR BUTTY BAR ON THE WAY THERE TO GET A DRINK OR SNACK AFTER I HAD GIVEN HIM A GOOD BREAKFAST I WOULDN'T TRUST HIM TO GO TO SCHOOL ON HIS OWN EVER AGAIN I WOULD DO MY DAMNDEST TO GET HIM/HER THERE AND IF THEY DON'T LIKE IT I WOULD TELL HIM/HER FIRMLY ABOUT THEIR FUTURE PROSPECTS THAT THEY ARE TRASHING IF THEY DON'T GET AN EDUCATION AND GET IT ON TIME EVERY DAY NO EXCEPTION WITHOUT FAIL. I don't call that disrespect being strict and slightly harsh in times of necessity where it is the education that is the key, that is "cruel to be kind" and that I what I had as a kid and it isn't wrong either.

If this wasn’t an explanation and you simply felt the need, do feel free to continue posting further random bulletins as events warrant.

Ms Everett: I share your concerns about the way in which many teachers behave towards pupils. Personally, I would have addressed this in a more appropriate and constructive manner.

Perhaps the teacher's attitude was a bit over the top but the reality is that the students should have been in school and not in the Nutty Butty. Local business could help support the school by not serving students out of school hours.

the teachers responsibillty doesnt start till they kids are through the gates. they have no right what so ever to be standing on a busy main road gathering these kids like lost sheep.

I was shouted at as a child and I complied with whatever I was told NO MATTER WHAT;it's NOT just good manners it's damned inbred courtesy to do whatever you're told as a child whether shouted at OR quietly talked to OR not. If the parents take these kids out of the school through your complaining just because they were late and the teacher ordered them to school;I would personally blame you. I personally wouldn't do this as a parent if a teacher shouted at my kid to get to school because they stopped off at a caff and were at risk of being late. Parents who respond to petty complaints through a local paper because a teacher ordered them to school and remove them are from school are being totally pettyminded,also what you forget is that if the kids parents were prosecuted in court because they took their kids out of school through the actions of a teacher to get them to school wouldn't legally have a leg to stand on at all and would get at the very least get fined/sent on parenting courses or face a prison sentence for their defiant stand over it.

I agree that school kids should be in school on time and if it was a job they were late for they would be sacked. These kids that were in my shop were not late when they arrived so am i supposed to say u cant come in here because by the time your butty will be ready you will be late for school. If thats the case then maybe i should stop every work man that comes through my cafe door n ask them if there going to be late for work. If so i cant serve you. I own a business and cant afford to start turning people away just because they may be late. There was no reason what so ever to stop this teacher in quietly having a word with these boys and remind them that they are late. Instead she chose to shout in public at these kids. They didnt turn round and swear at her or give her any cheek at all, instead they walked straight to school. obviously they know good manners unlike this senior teacher. Every one i have spoke to have all said i did the right thing by trying to let parents know how there kids are being spoke to. Its only a minority that think i have spoke to the paper to increase my profits. Those people have obviously judged me by there own standerds and not mine.

I applaud the school and the teacher who ordered them back to school;education and having skills in life to get a job at the end of it is MORE IMPORTANT THAN BEING LATE BECAUSE PARENTS ARE LAZY IN NOT GIVING THEIR KIDS A BREAKFAST BEFORE THEY GO TO SCHOOL. "IT'S NOT THE PARENTS FAULT YOU SAY" but it is if they don't get them up early enough to give them a breakfast in the morning-if I had kids I would give them a breakfast in the morning before they go to school NOT GIVE THEM MONEY TO GO TO THE LOCAL CAFF AND END UP BEING LATE THROUGH HAVING A FULL BREAKFAST ON THE MONEY I GIVE THEM. Siding up with the school and defending your cafe and the kids' right to be late for lessons because of it encourages sloppy couldn't-care-less attitudes to timekeeping and attendance that may well stay with them through their lives(and if they got a job with that sort of attitude towards an employer by their new workers popping into cafes/buttyshops for breakfast and being late for work they would be fired AND QUITE RIGHTLY SO;I don't think any employer would put up with excuses from these young people in jobs because they were late for work through having a breakfast en-route to work). Respect matters not one bit here;I would have co-operated with the teacher and refused to serve the kids if I knew they were going to be late for school in my eyes a good education and a good job at the end of it is more important than sloppy timekeeping and attendance in a newly acquired job and a few warnings and a final disciplinary and sacking for lateness and the kids lounging around at home on benefit for the rest of their lives because of this sloppy attitude to work.

'Mrs Miggins' is for me 'Mrs Muggins' because I can find no useful anagrams of Mrs Miggins. However, an anagram of Mrs Muggins is Gin Mugs: mugs of gin are what I may suppose Mrs Miggins has drunk so that she could be so drunk as to hold her opinion.

Hw rude some people are. When i rangthe observer i never once thought about my profits. when i confronted this teacher about her actions she was very rude towards myself and other people in my cafe. we were all disgusted at the way these YOUNG ADULTS were being spoken too. Like i said to the teacher there was no need to be screaming at these school kids on the street like she did. she made a fool of her self as you can imagine how busy the area is at 8:45. Theseshool kids would have been just a few minutes late but when they got to school they were locked out making them nearly half an hour late. were is the sense. i understand lateness is a problem in schools and always will be unfortunatly. when i spoke to Mr Burke all he said was that letters would be sent home to late children. Aletter does nothing these days. my 4 year old son speaks to people with respect. Its just a shame teachers cant let alone a senior teacher. Every one is so quick to call school kids of today. I simply wanted to make people understand that its not always the parents fault. My piont was if you give young adults respect then they will learn how to show it. When the school used to let the last years out at dinner it gave them a sence of maturity and something to look forward to in your last year. Now in my eyes they are locked away like animals. some may not agree but thats my view and im sure the school kids would agree. like i said i didnt once think about my profits, just about sticking up for the local school kids for a change.

Heavy-handed, Mrs Muggins? That's an unfortunate adjective to apply to a teacher: at best, it means unjustly domineering. At worst, it suggests that the teacher is cut from the cloth of those who abused us with cane and slap. We who were abused do not forget.

Was not the teacher herself late for her classes? Did any of her colleagues scream at her?

A considered response from a professional teacher would have been to note that the pupils were not in school and to deal with them later. It is easy for me to say that teacher training isn't what it used to be, so I've easily said it.

The school were obviously aware of the pupil’s whereabouts, so could have spoken directly with the owner beforehand to explain that there are problems with kids being late and they are trying to improve on things.

That way, the café owner is aware that at 8.50am, they’re already 10 mins late and need to get moving and a teacher coming in to collar all the kids wont be so much of a shock.

She should be encouraging them to be in school on time and not seen to be “siding” with the school though. I don’t think going to the local newspaper is the best way to help the school’s cause if I’m perfectly honest - even if the teacher was a bit heavy handed.

The shopowner is just thinking about herself and her profits not the welfare of the kids;the teacher was right to order them back to school(the shopowner DOESN'T have a say in this whatsoever)and furthermore education is more important than kids getting the breakfast their parents fail to give them-a typical indication of lazy idle parenting. If the kids want a breakfast their parents should wake them up early enough to give them a proper breakfast-NOT give them money for one to go the local caff ending up late for school in the morning.

The shopowner is very selfish in putting her own interests of making money first over the necessity of pupils to have education and be in school on time;I defend to the ground the rights of teachers to do this over her ignorant attitude of letting them come in late to school and late to lessons-if pupils came into my shop and a teacher came in ordering them to school I WOULDN'T HAVE THE COULDN'T CARE LESS ATTITUDE OF THE FACT THEY ARE CUSTOMERS THAT SHE DID AND DEFEND THEIR RIGHTS TO STAY AND GO INTO SCHOOL LATE.
