STEVE Halford admitted he was "devastated" after his double sending-offs.

The defender was dismissed on Saturday in the FA Trophy against Burton and saw red for a second yellow in the final minutes of the FA Cup third round defeat at Colchester on Tuesday.

"I do wear my heart on my sleeve and I am devastated," said the 23-year-old.

Halford was judged to have pulled down last man Dale Anderson on Saturday for a straight red in the 4-2 loss.

"I felt that was harsh, I thought he fell too easy and I didn't deserve it. I was miffed with the decision."

And, against Colchester, he had been booked and was shown a second yellow for protesting that their second goal was off-side in the 86th minutes.

"It was just the emotion, it was a tense affair and I felt it was off-side. I can't really regret it as it is one of those things that happens but, looking back, I shouldn't have done it. I was het up as things weren't going our way, it was frustration, but the other lads have told me to keep my head up. I can't believe it though really - I was just caught up in the occasion."

It is the third time this season Halford has been dismissed and he now faces a lengthy ban - of maybe five matches - starting at Burton a week on Saturday.

"It is gutting but there is nothing I can do. I have just got to hope the lads keep us on track for the play-offs. We are disappointed to be out of the cup but we have played five games against league opposition and haven't disgraced ourselves.

"We are not far off the Second or Third Division clubs. Now we have just got to work hard to get out of the Conference."

  • THE chairman, directors, management and players of Stanley would like to thank every supporter who has followed the Reds this season, especially the 300 who were able to make the trip to Colchester on Tuesday night.
